QUERY: I am looking for any information on second lieutenant Leonard Cunningham HOSKINS from East Las Vegas, NM. Lt. Hoskins died in France in 1918 during WWI. He received the Service Cross from both the US and France. In 1921, a bunker was constructed at Fort Crockett on the seawall in Galveston, TX named after Lt. Hoskins. Since he was not originally from Galveston, I wondered if anyone knows who or why his name was given tot he bunker? He was sweeping an area for wounded and was killed while escorting some of his men to safety so he certainly was deserving of the honor. The inscription reads: Leonard Hoskins 1921-1946.

The bunker was begun in 1921 and an attempt was made to dismantle it in 1946. Deeming this to be too difficult, it still remains in place today on the hillside below the San Luis Hotel in Galveston. His father, Daniel Tilden HOSKINS and other relatives are buried in the Masonic area cemetery in Las Vegas. The lieutenant is buried in the military cemetery where many from the battle of the Argonne area are laid.

I would like to set up a folder in the vertical files of our local library with information on Lt. HOSKINS and his family. Would anyone be able to provide photos or other information? The gentleman who originally became interested in Lt. HOSKINS saw the name on the bunker on a recent vacation to the area, and wanted to know more about the name. No one could really give any information so we have been internet seeking. If possible, this gentleman is interested in possibly having a plaque created to commemorate Lt. HOSKINS .

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

QUERYElla 'Alta' WEST was born about 1866 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana and she died about April 25, 1914 in Las Vegas, San Miguel County, New Mexico at age 48. She was buried in Montefiore, Masonic, Odd Fellows Cemeteries, Las Vegas, New Mexico; she married Frank J. GEHRING who was born 1861, probably in Crawfordsville, on September 1, 1884 in Montgomery County. Ella and Frank moved to Kansas. In 1899, Ella, age 33, and Frank, age 38, moved to Las Vegas, San Miguel County, New Mexico. Frank GEHRING  operated a hardware store on 6th Street, and his brother, Edward GEHRING, is listed (Las Vegas City Directory 1900) as a clerk in that store. Both lived at the Central Hotel, which was less than a full block away from the store. In those years there was a dire housing shortage and their residence in a hotel reflects that.

My great grandmother was Veronique's youngest sister.  She arrived in Las Vegas, at the age of 15, circa 1885.  The MONTMERENCIs had several sons.

QUERY:  I am looking for information on an aunt, Verlie Mae OWENS, who was in the Mental Asylum in

Las Vegas, NM. She was born 28 September 1906 and died 2 March 1946. I think she may have died in the hospital there.  At the age of 7, Verlie had meningitis and became deaf. She was in the Austin School for the Deaf from 1925 until 1927 or 1928.  I cannot find any information for this hospital or for my aunt. I think she was there from about 1940 until her death in 1946.  Any information you can give me will be appreciated. Thank you!
